2016 Creating New Traditions

Happy New Year – what a difference a year makes! Last year at this time, our school did not even have a name.
Now that Lyons Mill Elementary’s staff, students and families have built the foundation for a great start as we successfully opened our school in August 2015, we are ready to hit the ground running as we collaborate to create events and traditions for the second half of our first school year!
Student Government Association, Girls on the Run, Chess Team, Navigators Dance Team, Vex Robotics, Lego Robotics, Jr. Makers Club, Bibliobabblers, Art Explorers, Slime (Students Learning Innovating & Mending our Environment), 24 Club, MESA (Math, Engineering, Science, Achievement) are just a few of the experiences that our students have enjoyed in our first few months. Check out our school website for more information:image lyonsmilles.bcps.org
Lyons Mill Elementary has a STEM Fair, a ballroom dancing program, a volleyball game against the Baltimore Blast, a StarLab planetarium program and a Sports Night filled with family fun already planned for this winter and spring. I look forward to hearing your ideas so we can kick off 2016 together – Explorers Believe, Explorers Achieve!

Capture that Excitement – Team LMES

March 8, 2015Lyons Mill Boundary Map March 2015

Wow – what a week!

Here are some highlights: Lyons Mill Elementary has an official boundary.

Kindergarten Round-Up dates and locations were announced. https://magic.piktochart.com/output/4884631-kindergarten-round-up

Several prospective staff members presented at the Liberty Road Recreation Council meeting.

I visited Woodholme Elementary spending time with the students who were curious about all the Lyons Mill programs.

Students are especially excited about the digital learning environment where every student – kindergarten through Grade 5 – and every teacher will have their own HP EliteBook Revolve 810 computer.

Establishing programs such as our grade 4 & grade 5 Student Government Association (SGA) really means that our students will help create Lyons Mill Elementary so that it becomes much more than a shiny, state-of-the-art building. Can’t wait to tell our students about all of our plans including the Student Technology Squad (STS) and the Maryland Science Olympiad Competitions.

Students, parents and community members will be excited to find that they are part of our learning community focused on Literacy, Math, Engineering and Science – Team LMES!

This week I will be visiting New Town Elementary’s students as well as an after-school program in the New Town area (the snow postponed last week’s scheduled visit). I hope to capture the excitement as I share our plans with all of you! @BaltCoPS @BCPSODL @LyonsMillMarch 8 2015 gym cafeteria

LMES – The Word is Out!

EdSurgeMarch 2, 2015

We really enjoyed presenting information about Lyons Mill Elementary to the Lyonswood HOA last week. This week, we are visiting the Liberty Road Recreation Council and a local after-school program in the New Town area.

On Wednesday, I will be visiting Woodholme Elementary to get our students’ input about the school mascot and school colors.

Teacher leaders are always looking for new ways to engage their students. This past Saturday, 8 teachers interested in joining the Lyons Mill staff spent the day attending the Tech for Schools Summit 2015 hosted by edSurge. Teachers had the chance to explore the latest technology tools and share feedback about their classroom applications.

Lyons Mill Elementary School’s boundary will be voted on this Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at Kenwood High School. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and will be live-streamed on the BCPS website (www.bcps.org). The public is welcome to attend all open sessions of the Board.

We have 97 followers on Twitter @LyonsMill which is pretty good considering our school name did not exist a month ago. Like us on Facebook too! We plan to start the before-school and after-school program selection process at the end of this month. Stay tuned for more information. @BaltCoPS @EdSurge

It is all about our COMMUNITY!

Lyons Mill ShirtFebruary 20, 2015

We are so excited to be stepping out and meeting all of you! We will be talking to parents and children at local after-school programs and homeowner’s associations. During our meet and greet sessions, you will have a chance to meet some Lyons Mill teachers and ask questions about the programs we are planning for you.

We have a Facebook page “Lyons Mill Elementary” and a twitter account @LyonsMill so we can start to post information about our school. If you would like to invite us to speak to your community group, please contact our office at 410-887-1719.

We are thrilled to start the mascot selection process with our students. We want our school mascot to reflect and represent who we are as we teach 21st century skills in a digital learning environment designed to prepare globally competitive students. With a redesigned curriculum and the 1:1 initiative, our blended learning emphasis will inspire and challenge our students in the areas of Literacy • Math • Engineering • Science. We want our students to relate to our mascot, be able to draw it and send a positive message out to our community.
